March 2005 Entries

It's time to write a blog.

So what's new, you ask.  Well, not a whole lot.

1.  We had our party.

Party went better than planned.  We had a total of 20 people come.  The food turned out well and the company was even better.  We even got a little ping-pong tournament going.

2.  April's family stayed (sans dad).

April's family stayed the night and we went into Wisconsin (the first time that they had been to Wisconsin).  We went to the Janesville mall, to eat at Fudruckers, and finally to Hemmy's in Beloit to look at fish for my aquarium.

That's all that really happened this past weekend.  We are completely settled into our house.  There are occasions where I have to search for a while to find what I am looking for, but for the most part I have figured it out.  Everyone will have to come and visit.

Mark and I are pretty much completely unpacked.  There are a few things that we just don't know what to do with.  We have had to buy more items for the house then we were originally expecting.  Menards has gotten a lot of our money.  There are still a few things that we would like to get, but those will come shortly.  This weekend we will finish everything so that by the 19th we will be set and ready to go for our Easter Celebration with our families.  We are expecting to have around 25 people here for that.

Well, it appears that I am writing the first blog for March.  A lot has happened since the last blog.

1.  We closed on our house

We closed on our house on Feb 25, and it went smoothly, for the most part.  Some of the paperwork was incorrect, so they had to change it on the spot.  The whole adventure only took 45 minutes, and then we left to start work on our new house!

2.  The painting fiasco

We got into the house and realized that the whole thing needed a new paint job.  The first day, and 4 gallons of ceiling paint later, we had the ceiling gleaming of white.

The next day we decided to paint the main area with a light gray, which was going to be used over the exisitng light beige.  So we thought one coat would be enough.  Not true.  We put the first coat on and the beige came through like you wouldn't believe.  Perplexed, we headed back to our friendly Menards, and we upgraded our paint to a much better paint.  They even exchanged it and marked the old paint as defective.  We get home with our new paint and paint another coat.  Same thing!  We couldn't believe it.  So we went back again thinking that maybe their formula was flawed because it was a custom color.  We went with a little bit darker color.  This time (which was 3rd time of painting a hallway, living room, dining room, and kitchen) we didn't care if it covered or not.  It was the LAST time we were painting.  Alas, the paint covered. After 3 coats of paint for the price of 3 gallons (Menards is good like that) we are done painting)  The 3 bedrooms aren't worth mentioning because they we're a piece of cake.

3.  The cable fiasco

Anyone that knows us is aware that internet is extremely important.  The cable company came out and installed everything and did their magic.  I guess the prerequisite to being a cable installer is incompetence.  He did his thing and of course we tried the connections out.  They hadn't shut off the cable for the last person.  So we try the internet connection.  Cable modem will not sync.  It finally syncs and we find out that they had had provisioned us for the wrong internet package.  STRIKE 1.  Then we get it re-provisioned and try the connection again.  Lousy download speeds! STRIKE 2.  Hook up the digital cable box and try the on Demand service.  Doesn't work! STRIKE 3.  The day after the install we try the cable again (during the day the down speeds are as advertised, right when you hit peak hours (5-10) it is crap) Cable picture for TV is worse than over the air signals. STRIKE 4 (I guess the baseball example is out.)

I am really going to miss Insight Cable, we are on Charter Cable now, and they have bad customer support.  For instance, I called about the Digital Box not working.  They say "everything looks great on our end", to which I reply "well that doesn't fix our problem now, does it"  Morons.

I am a little bit better with the cable today as the digital cable was working, the internet connection was at a reasonable speed, and everything seems to be in working order.

4.  The move

We have been slowly moving the small things in.  Our big move is tomorrow.  We have lots of help, so hopefully the process wil go nice and quickly.  We rented a 17 foot truck to move all of our crap.  That hopefully will be plenty big.

We are very happy with this house.  Every day I find one more thing that I love about it.  Couldn't be happier.  Even though we had a really rought time for a couple of days (to the point where I was a sourpuss), everything has turned out great.  Here's to a new house. Cheers.
